Why Purple?

A Science Fair

My daughter's science fair started it all.....

Every novel invention starts with a good story, an accidental find, or a lucky hunch.  Violet4Earth started because of my daughter.

Just like every child between the ages of 5-8, the questions are thrown out during every opportunity; a car ride, trip to the grocery store, trip to the aquarium, every where you go, questions, questions, questions.  Exhausting, but she is now in her early twenties and I miss those times so much.

My daughter was the same way.  Living in Sonoma County we often drove down Highway 12 or Highway 29 in Napa.  Such beautiful landscapes and she would start the questions right away.  Mommy, what are clouds?  Mommy, why are the grapes like that?  Do they taste good?  I want grapes?  Then one day she asked "Mommy, what is in the plastic houses?"

Greenhouses.  "Mommy, why do they use plastic?  Why is it that color?  Can we make a pink pony one?"

Soon, the questions stop and they are off to nap, then off to school, and finally, for my favorite homework assignment- The Science Fair.

My daughter decided she wanted to explore that question she had asked so long ago.  Why plastic? Why clear plastic?  Would another color work better?  Could it be pink? Blue? Orange?  We decided to try as many colors we could find.

So we headed to Village Art Supply in Santa Rosa, CA.  and purchased every color acrylic film they had in stock.  We then made little greenhouses.  We took soil from the very drought stricken, dead dirt of the hillside behind our home.   A hillside that would burn years later.

We chose Marigold seeds to plant in each box.  The clear winner after water and plant food?  The dark purple film.  I was intrigued as a scientist, but also because purple was my favorite, my signature color.  My daughter moved on to anime art.

I moved on to Violet4Earth.
